The Ultimate guide to Sex Positions: Corkscrew

By Maya Khamala

Let’s talk about sex positions.

Whether you’re starting out with a new partner or looking to spice things up with an old flame, this series of guides is for you.

Next up, we have the lust-enhancing Corkscrew position.

Corkscrew:

In a nutshell, Corkscrew involves the receiving partner laying down on a bed or sofa (or kitchen counter) for support, with their back to their partner, while the thrusting partner stands and straddles, entering from behind.

One thing’s for sure, Corkscrew puts the “screw” back into your sex life. A rear-entry sex position requiring both partners to be relatively physically comfortable and have baseline flexibility, Corkscrew offers deeper penetration and increased stimulation for the receiving partner, while enabling the thrusting partner to explore potentially all-new territory.

Corkscrew requires solid coordination between partners, but thankfully is inherently conducive to engaging with your partner. It feels safe for most women who are not yet comfortable/super intimate with a partner, allowing for ease of communication while exploring each other’s pleasure zones. Of course, it happens to be a fantastically intimate position for exploring first time anal.

Corkscrew may also be ideal when the receiving partner is feeling tired or lazy—making it perfect for slow ‘n steady Sunday mornings in bed

A note on terms:

When discussing penetration, we use the terms “thrusting partner” for the person with the penis (biological or synthetic), and “receiving partner” for the person accepting the act of penetration (vaginal or anal).

It is important to note that being a receiver is not a passive, subservient role. It is an active, enthusiastic role. There is power in choice, and by choosing to invite their partner inside them, the receiver is exercising that power.

Furthermore, the thrusting partner is not just a giver. Of course, they also receive pleasure during the act. But for the sake of clarity and consistency, we have selected these terms for the two sides of the dynamic.

How to do it:

To get into this position, the receiving partner lies on her side on a bench, couch, or bed, resting on her hip and forearm. The thrusting partner kneels or stands behind her and penetrates her from behind.

As he thrusts, he twists his body to one side while keeping his hands on her hips for stability. The receiving partner may support herself with her hands.

To boost the experience further, the receiving partner might keep her thighs pressed tightly together, giving her a firmer hold on the thrusting partner's penis.

The receiving partner may also prefer a more active role, and enjoy thrusting her hips slightly to match and/or adjust the thrusting partner’s depth, tempo, and rhythm of penetration with her movements.

Reasons we love it:

- The combination of the thrusting partner’s twisting motion and the ‘from-the-back’ position allows for deeper penetration.

- The twisting motion can provide a unique and new sensation for both partners compared to more traditional sexual positions.

- The perpendicular stance allows for multiple new areas to be reached—including the receiving partner’s g-spot.

- The close proximity and physical contact of this position can help strengthen communication for both partners, helping them ease into more intensely up-close-and-personal positions.

Variations to try out:

Legs up

The receiving partner places her legs on the thrusting partner’s shoulders for even deeper penetration and increased stimulation.

This variation can feel positively incredible, particularly if sex never feels quite deep enough for either one of you.

Turn-around

The thrusting partner switches up the twisting direction to add a whole new roster of different sensations.

This variation is for the explorers at heart, and those commonly in search of that brand new feeling.

Kiss-around

The thrusting partner incorporates additional physical contact, such as kissing or caressing, as a way of increasing emotional intimacy and overall pleasure.

This one is perfect for those who want to “screw,” but with ample love to spare.

Other tips and tricks:

- For added support, don’t hesitate to integrate the use of a pillow—be it to raise the receiving partner’s hips, wedge between her legs, or for any other strategy that enhances the comfort of either partner.

- Go slow. Start slowly and be patient with yourself and your partner. It may take some time and practice to get the technique right and find a comfortable rhythm.

- Communicate with your partner. It’s already been said, but bears repeating: communication is key to any sexual activity, and is extra important in more coordinated positions like Corkscrew. Be sure to discuss any physical limitations or concerns with your partner before attempting the position, and don't be afraid to switch sides—chances are you’ll feel more comfortable laying on one side than the other!

- Introduce sex toys. Using a vibrator or dildo on your clit (or elsewhere!) while you Corkscrew the night away just may take things to the next dirty level. Bonus tip: if you’re trying the Corkscrew vaginally, consider wearing a butt plug at the same time for added sensation—chances are your partner will feel it too.

- Add lube as needed. A little added glide can help with timing your movements to feel extra synched-up as your bodies push and rub up against each other. Hot AF—you heard it here first. <3
